Every commercial refrigeration buyer in India hears the same two words at the time of purchase: warranty and AMC. They're related but they're not the same. Here's what each actually covers, what it costs, and how to decide.
What warranty actually covers
Manufacturer warranty on commercial refrigeration in India is typically 1 year for the unit and 2-3 years on the compressor (varies by brand). Warranty covers:
- Manufacturing defects in the unit itself
- Compressor failure due to manufacturing fault
- Faulty wiring, control board, gas leak from factory
Warranty does not cover:
- Damage from voltage fluctuation (very common in India)
- Damage from improper use, dropping, mishandling
- Routine wear and tear
- Refrigerant top-up after the first year
- Door seal replacement, fan motor service
- Cleaning, descaling, preventive maintenance
What AMC actually covers
Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) is a paid service contract between you and the dealer (us, in your case) that covers:
- Preventive maintenance visits — typically 2-4 per year, where we inspect the compressor, clean the condenser coil, check refrigerant pressure, replace door seals if worn, and verify temperature accuracy.
- Breakdown response — when something goes wrong, you get priority service. Most AMC contracts include a guaranteed response time (e.g., within 24-48 hours).
- Spare parts at AMC pricing — replacement parts are often included or offered at AMC member pricing rather than full retail.
Two AMC types
- Comprehensive AMC — covers all service visits, parts, and labour. Higher annual fee but full peace of mind. Typically 8-12% of the unit price per year.
- Non-comprehensive AMC — covers service visits and labour only. You pay for parts at AMC pricing. Lower annual fee, typically 4-6% of the unit price.
When AMC is worth it
AMC is worth the premium when:
- Your equipment runs 24×7 (ice cream parlours, modern retail, hotels)
- Downtime costs you real money (cloud kitchens, F&B chains)
- The unit is in a high-humidity area (coastal Mumbai, Vasai, Virar)
- The unit handles voltage-sensitive loads
- You don't have an in-house technical team
AMC is less essential when:
- The unit runs lightly (e.g., office pantry water cooler)
- You have a strong local technician on call
- The unit is brand new and under warranty for first year
Pro tip: bundle AMC with the first-year purchase
Most dealers (including us) offer a discount when you bundle a 2-3 year AMC with the original purchase. The cumulative discount can be 20-30% versus signing up later.
