Refrigerant Types in Commercial Freezers — R134a, R290, R600a Explained

Most commercial refrigeration buyers never look at the refrigerant type sticker on their freezer. But it's worth understanding — refrigerant type affects cooling performance, power consumption, environmental impact, and how easy your unit will be to service in 5 years.

The three main refrigerants in Indian commercial freezers

R134a (HFC-134a)

The most widely used commercial refrigerant in India for the last 15 years. Non-flammable, stable, well-understood by technicians, and globally available. Found in older commercial deep freezers, visi coolers, and water coolers.

Pros: Universally serviceable, every refrigeration technician in India has worked with it. Spare gas is widely available.

Cons: High Global Warming Potential (GWP ~1,430). Being phased down globally under the Kigali Amendment. Will gradually become harder to source through this decade.

R290 (Propane)

The eco-modern choice. Natural hydrocarbon refrigerant with very low GWP (~3). Excellent thermodynamic efficiency — typically 10-15% better cooling per watt than R134a. Used in modern Celfrost, Voltas, Blue Star commercial deep freezers.

Pros: Lowest environmental impact. Better energy efficiency means lower running cost. Future-proof against refrigerant phase-downs.

Cons: Flammable. Charge sizes are limited by safety regulations (150g per cooling circuit maximum). Requires technicians trained in hydrocarbon handling. Generally fine for commercial units up to 600L; larger units need split circuits or alternative refrigerants.

R600a (Isobutane)

Similar to R290 — natural hydrocarbon, low GWP (~3). Slightly different thermodynamic profile. Common in smaller commercial units like cold drink fridges and ice cream display freezers.

Pros: Eco-friendly, energy-efficient, future-proof.

Cons: Same as R290 — flammable, restricted charge sizes, requires trained technicians.

What about R404a, R407c, R32?

You'll see these on some commercial refrigeration units:

  • R404a — used in older commercial freezers and cold rooms. Very high GWP (~3,920) and being phased out. Avoid for new purchases.
  • R407c — found in some commercial visi coolers, moderate GWP (~1,770). Being phased down.
  • R32 — primarily an air conditioning refrigerant, occasionally seen in heat pump-based commercial units. Moderate GWP (~675).

What you should look for in 2026

For new commercial refrigeration purchases in India today, prefer units running on:

  1. R290 or R600a for smaller units (under 600L) — best efficiency, future-proof, lower running cost.
  2. R134a for larger units or where charge size restrictions on hydrocarbons don't fit. Still serviceable, still widely available.

Avoid: R404a units (legacy stock, hard to service after 2027), unbranded imports with unmarked refrigerant (can be anything, including illegal mixtures).

How to check what's in your unit

The refrigerant type is printed on a sticker on the back of every commercial refrigeration unit, usually near the compressor. It'll say something like "Refrigerant: R290, Charge: 60g" or "Refrigerant: HFC-134a, Charge: 220g".

If you're buying new, ask the dealer (us) to confirm before invoice. We mention it in every quote we issue.

Servicing implications

If your unit runs on R290 or R600a, only use technicians trained in hydrocarbon handling. Improper service of hydrocarbon refrigerants is a safety risk. Our service team is trained for all refrigerant types — if you have an existing R290 unit needing service, we cover it.

Regulatory note

India is a signatory to the Kigali Amendment under the Montreal Protocol. HFC refrigerants like R134a and R404a are on a managed phase-down schedule — production and import will decline through the 2030s. Buying R290/R600a units today positions you better for the next 10-15 years of ownership.
